Lesnick has developed a special relationship with concrete. He knows
its vast potential. At the same time, he is aware of its limits.
Most importantly, this expert knows how to mix and mold concrete in
a way that implements creative inspirations.
The superior texture of Mark’s formula is no accident. It is
a result of working with concrete on a day-to-day basis since 1971.
The material created by his formula is superior to anything offered
by the competition for many reasons.
First of all, the concrete is internally reinforced with carbon fiber
and steel. These elements offer added strength without additional
weight. Glass fiber reinforcement is also used to create structures
that are thin yet durable and even flexible. Also, comparable in weight
to conventional furniture. As a matter of fact, this concrete is approximately
one-third lighter than the ordinary variety
In some designs, polyvinyl acetate (PVA) is introduced into the formula.
This imbues concrete with the ability to span and cantilever considerable
distances without additional support. (Quite different than granite,
marble, limestone, tile and other products that demand the use of
a substructure) A definite advantage in terms of cost as well as durability!
The special formula also enhances the color “palette”
of concrete. Both grey and white cement are used to provide an unlimited
range of color. “We stock seven or eight different varieties
of stone and sand, which allows us to provide textural variations
in our finishes,” says Mark.
“For instance, we use black
sand and stone for our dark concrete and white sand and stone for
our lighter and brighter color choices. At times, we use contrasting
stone and sand to produced interesting textural effects.”
Like those alchemists of old who reportedly transformed base materials
into gold, Mark uses the latest developments in concrete manufacturing
technology to create artful and functional fixtures and furnishings.
